The first 24 hours
Your tattoo artist will apply a protective bandage right after your session. Leave it on for the recommended time, usually 2 to 4 hours depending on the type of bandage. It protects the fresh wound from bacteria and friction.
After removing the bandage:
Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, mild soap.
Pat the skin dry with a clean paper towel. Never rub.
Apply a thin layer of recommended aftercare cream.
Days 1 to 3: Cleaning and Care
Your tattoo is highly sensitive during the first few days. Wash it two to three times daily with clean water and mild soap to remove sweat, bacteria, and dead skin cells.
After every wash:
Let your skin air dry completely or pat it dry gently
Apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment or lotion
Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattooed area
Too much ointment clogs pores and slows down healing. Less is more.
Days 4 to 14: The healing phase.
Around day 4, your skin will probably start to itch and peel slightly. This is completely normal. Resist the urge to scratch or pick at the flakes—doing so can pull the ink out and cause scarring.
During this phase:
Keep washing and moisturizing gently every day
If the itching gets intense, pat the skin gently instead of scratching
Avoid tight clothing or anything rubbing against the tattoo
After about two weeks, the outer layer of skin is usually healed. However, the deeper layers still need another 4 to 6 weeks to fully regenerate.
Signs of infection: when to see a doctor
Mild redness, swelling, and warmth are normal for the first few days. The following signs are not normal and require medical attention:
Severe, increasing redness or swelling after day 3 or 4
Yellowish or greenish discharge
Persistent fever
Red streaks spreading from the tattoo
Severe pain that gets worse instead of better
When in doubt, get it checked out. Better safe than sorry.
Inside the studio: the tattoo process
What to avoid at all costs
Sun: Direct UV radiation fades colors and disrupts healing. Cover your tattoo completely for at least 2 to 3 weeks, then always use high SPF
Swimming: Pools, lakes, and baths carry a high risk of infection. Wait at least 2 to 3 weeks, though showering is fine
Tight clothing: Friction irritates healing skin and can pull out ink
Scratching or picking: Even if the itch is brutal, peeling off scabs can cause permanent damage
Over-moisturizing: Clogged pores will noticeably slow down your healing time
Common Tattoo Aftercare Mistakes
Hitting the sun or the pool too soon
Using the wrong aftercare products (with fragrances or alcohol)
Applying too much ointment
Scratching when it itches
Wearing tight or rubbing clothes

Tattoo Aftercare: The Bottom Line
Proper aftercare is just as important as choosing the right studio. Keep your routine simple. Clean gently, apply a thin layer of ointment, and avoid sun and water. That is how your tattoo heals perfectly.
